Barn Hunt

You guys! I am so excited, I just wanted to share. I finally found Maggie a Barn Hunt class! It starts in 3 weeks. It's 2 hours away from home, in Columbia - but it's not on a weekend and it's closer than Springfield, so I call it a win! I think she's really going to like this. She loves chasing squirrels. And even though they don't actually get to chase the rats I think she's going to love smelling them.

  • She will love it!
And may I say you put me to shame with the lengths you are willing to go to to give your dogs a rich life.

    • I'm still looking for her niche. The thing that will really help her blossom. She deserves that. I know it's out there. She loves going for a ride in the car more than anything. And I love training. It's what I really want to do. I'm not very good at it, but I love every second. These dogs are the thing in life that I'm most passionate about, and I spent way too much time just hanging out with them and not getting out there and being with other dog people and doing things.

I also really like scent work. I can't hide it anywhere where Willow can't find it. Her nose amazes me. And I don't have to walk in a straight line for that sport. It's great!

  • Jasper's full brother from a previous litter has his RATO title.

    • I think people get freaked out when we start talking about "hunting rats." But A. rats are great little creatures when they're not destroying your home, and B. The rats are in tubes. They're not just running around the barn. You don't actually have any contact with them. The dogs just smell them.

      • I think Boca would love it.  She goes crazy for squirrels and rats are practically the same.

She's very interested in my friend's guinea pig too.

        • Around here a lot of people consider squirrels rats with fuzzy little tails. I'm sure the dogs don't comprehend much difference between them. I love squirrels. But when the dogs are losing their minds I sometimes wish they would find another yard to play in.

    • We had a terrible invasion of cotton rats year before last.  Haley had ZERO interest in them.  Otis set traps every night baited with peanut butter and caught 2 or 3 a night for about three weeks.

      • Jack wouldn't have been interested either. We have chipmunks in the yard constantly, and Jack ignored them. They were no use to him, they can't throw a ball, lol.
Jasper on the other hand is obsessed with them. And birds, and squirrels, and every other kind of prey.

        • Haley has a ball obsession and he does chase deer and cats.
