WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.

Yes, a few people here have fed a homemade diet. You must have a recipe that has been approved by a veterinary internal medicine or nutrition specialist, an accurate analysis of the calorie content,  and you must also add mineral supplements. There are many books on the market that have recipes.

Hi,  Has anyone had success making their own food for their pup.  Do you add vitamins to it???

My almost 6 month old goldendoodle puppy has had very very soft stool (complete mush when picked up outside) despite trying many different foods.  We’ve had her on probiotics for a while which didn’t help therefore we stopped giving them.  She has had countless fecal studies which have all been negative. Our vet feels she may have a chicken allergy based on symptoms she’s had on chicken based foods (itchy skin and diarrhea).  The firmest her stool has been is while on Zignature lamb.  The problem is she has about 6 stools per day on it which seem to start out firm and soften as the day goes on.  We recently tried to transition to Farmina puppy pumpkin formula which resulted in very soft stool each time we tried to progress.  I’d love some tips and opinions.  Thanks!

That should have said catfish oil, not cod oil. But in another formula, wild boar was being replaced with cod, lol. So if that's the same formula, it's of no concern.

Comment by Karen, Jasper and Jackdoodle on August 19, 2018 at 5:31pm

Well, cod oil is being replaced with safflower oil in a few of the formulas, which might affect the Omega 3 content slightly if they are not increasing the fish content of those formulas. That was really the only thing I saw that seemed of any concern at all.

Karen, that was my basic interpretation also, but not knowing about different oils, for example, I wasn't sure if the new ones were 'dumbing down' of the ones previously used.  Thank you.  I guess the new formula might affect some dogs' digestion or preference so it is good to know why.

Nancy, I don't see anything that would affect quality.  Quality is based on sourcing of ingredients and manufacturing processes, as well as the integrity of the company, and I see no changes there. There are a couple of changes to some formulas that might slightly affect the nutritional profiles, but not to a noticeable degree from what I can tell.

Lost my post, so... while I thoroughly read F.’s link to the changes in Champion ingredients, I am not educated enough to interpret how these changes might affect quality or ?  I would like to know what others who are educated in this area might want to share.
