WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Fungi Treats?

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Jul 5. 9 Replies

I promise I'm not considering feeding the girls treats made out of Koji (Aspergillus oryzae) as the protein. But I was randomly browsing the internet and I stumbled across an ad for this, and I thought, "well that's the weirdest thing ever. I better…Continue

Orijen was named the Dog Food of the year fro 2009 by the Whole Dog Journal. IMO, you cannot buy a higher quality kibble.
The protein issue is controversial. If we think about dogs who are fed the RAW diet, they eat nothing BUT protein...just meat & bones, and their owners will tell you they are healthier than any other dogs. I don't necessarily agree with that, but Jack is doing better on the Orijen than he's ever done on any other food.

EVO has a new flavor now, a herring & fish formula. At least, I think it's new.

We are in Tennessee and find Orijen to be a little easier to find than Acana. Barkley is 6 1/2 months and has been on Orijen large breed puppy since 11 weeks. He has done really well on it and does not seem to get the carbohydrate fluctuation that sometimes occurs with kibble containing grains. It is best to slowly transition a pup to the new food by gradually increasing it. I highly recommend Orijen. Also, we occasionally change it up by using EVO Red Meat, but Barkley prefers the Orijen.

Ann - I am in Canada too - Ontario, and Acana is made in Canada. Hopefully they can find it. :)

I just checked out dog foods to switch Toby over. I went with Acana, which is made by the makers of Orijen. Orijen is very high in protein, over 40%, I think. Acana is 29% protein. In discussing it with the owner of the store where I purchased it, she says she has found the labs and retrievers tend to do well on Orijen for a time, and then can get the runs because of the high protein. Toby tends to have a tricky stomach anyway, so I went with the lower protein Acana.

Karen's own Jack is on Orijen and I know she thinks very highly of it. It's quite expensive but one of the top rated foods.

Maddy loves them too! I always laugh when I see what 46lb dog will do for a little Charlee Bear Turkey and Cranberry treat!
