WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Linda, you can feed an apple but 1 a day might be too much and give him a loose stool. Start slowly maybe give a 1/2 and see how it goes. Let us know how it works out.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this group and I can't figure out where to ask my question. Yankee loves apples. Is it OK to feed him an apple a day? How much is too much?

I appreciate your input.

I just did a little bit of research on this, and it is the leaves, stems, bark, and in particular, the pit, or seed, that contains toxins, particularly from the Guatemalan variety. Apparently, in areas of the country where the avocado trees grow in people's yards, the dogs eat the fruit that falls to ground, pit, stem, and all, and become very ill. Nowhere does it say that the flesh of the fruit is dangerous. As with anything else, I would exercise caution with respect to amounts, just like with garlic.
From the website:
Concern has been expressed by the ASPCA about the consumption of the leaves, fruit, bark, and stems from the avocado tree, with the exception of the avocado fruit which is used for the oil and meal; none of these parts are factors in any of the AvoDerm Natural pet products formulations.

Dr. Art Craigmill, UC Davis, Professor and Extension Specialist in Environmental Toxicology has said that his studies and other research in the United States and Australia have shown that the problem of toxicity is in the leaves and the pit of the Guatemalan variety; the avocado meat of the fruit and oils have not been shown to be toxic. AvoDerm Natural pet products do not utilize any Guatemalan variety avocados, nor do we use any leaves or pits of any variety of avocados for our avocado meal and oil.

The avocado meal and oil used in the AvoDerm Natural pet products comes from the meat of the fruit and does not contain leaves, bark, skin or pit of the fruit. The oil is extracted from ripened fruit in which the meat pulp has been separated from the skin and the pit. Through a mechanical separation process the oil is extracted and filtered and placed into sealed containers. The pulp of the fruit is dried, ground, and screened before being placed into its final packaging and than shipped to our facility.

I don't care about the rest of the info there from the avocado growers' association, etc. (what else would they say?), but the UC Davis veterinarian school is one of the finest in the world. When a UC Davis toxicology professor publicly makes a staement about dog food, I'm willing to listen.

I have never fed it. It is on the DO NOT FEED list with onions and grapes.

Does anyone happen to know whether or not avocado is good or harmful to dogs? I have been informed, and read it in our puppy guide that avocado is harmful, although Avoderm contains avocado. We just switched from Nutro products to Avoderm and Innova. The Avoderm site posts this article I was wondering if anyone has had issues with it, we have been quite happy with the new foods, and Toby has had no issues whatsoever. Is this something I need to be concerned with now?

Robin, there are many discussions here about food allergies. Please search thru the discussions listed above. I have just left some information on the post you started about it in the medical group.

Dalai has been constantly licking her paws and biting at them and I was wondering if anything knows if this could be a food allergy? Thanks, Robin

Has anyone tried the Costco brand "Kirkland" dog food? It sounds pretty good to me, and its pretty inexpensive

Our puppy will come home April 18. I would like to do some homecooking and read many of your posts. The breeder feeds Iams. I would like to use Solid Gold dry and homecooking. I am concerned about proportions. The pup will be 8 weeks when she comes home. Thanks
