WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.

IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" (below) BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION:

We started this group because of personal experiences with many of the issues that are commonly discussed on dog forums regarding food, and because these experiences have led us to do extensive research in an attempt to obtain FACT-BASED knowledge of these issues, rather than relying on anecdotes, myths, and junk-science, much of it put out there by people who are trying to sell something. The 2007 pet food recalls in which thousands of dogs and cats died or were permanently sickened by foods that contained melamine from China substituted for glutens had a profound effect on some of us, and this group was started as an attempt to help educate others on manufacturing practices and pet nutrition so that they can avoid losing beloved pets because of unacceptable foods made by "Big Dog Food" companies. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
You can start a new discussion if you have a question, or you can continue in an existing discussion if you prefer. Please do try to use the search feature before starting a new discussion, though, to help eliminate duplicate discussions on the same topics. You can search through past discussions for a topic by clicking "View All" at the bottom of the Food Group discussion forum, and then entering a word or phrase in the box. You will usually find lots of info and possibly the answer to your question. There is a wealth of information here from many good sources.

Products on our recommended lists have been screened not just for the ingredients themselves, but also for the sourcing of the ingredients.

Membership in this group is voluntary. Everyone is free to feed their dog whatever they choose, but it is assumed that you are here because you want to learn about better nutritional and commercial food options. All questions are welcome. Proselytizing, however, is not welcome. If you want to feed your dog Beneful or Ol' Roy, that's your right, and if you want to learn why those foods may be dangerous to your pet's health, we're happy to tell you. But recommendations for these, Iams, Purina, Hill's, and other products  that have killed other group members' dogs are not okay here, and may result in your being suspended from the group. Similarly, if you believe that the only proper way to feed a dog is with a prey model raw diet, that all kibbles are harmful, and/or that raw food or "holistic" diets and/or supplements such as coconut oil will cure diseases or health conditions, this is not the right group for you. We are fact based. Anyone recommending raw feeding or any type of holistic diet or supplement as a cure or treatment for allergies or illnesses will be suspended from the group.

Welcome, and thanks for reading!
PLEASE NOTE: WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION, NOR ANY LINKS TO ADVERTISING. THANK YOU.

  • RAW DYNAMIC: Anybody heard of them ? Small, NYC-based mom-and-pop that makes these 100% Grass Fed Lamb Treats. I picked up a bag the other day to try and Teddy LOVES them (I'm thinking of going back and getting a 2nd or 3rd bag before they sell out; who knows if this pet store gets more in stock). Not seeing any direct links via the Internet, Chewy, or Amazon. Made/Produced in USA so somewhat comfortable with them.

    Found this: https://www.rawdynamicpets.com/category-s/1864.htm

Raw Dynamic is a NYC-based pet dog food company that makes a natural raw food diet for dogs
  • I saw this post from Insider Envy stating foods that are not good and wonder if there's any truth to this as Orijen & Fromm are on here?? https://www.insiderenvy.com/fda-names-16-dog-food-brands-linked-to-...
    • I am so sick of this ad popping up on my feed about once a week! Look at the Forum part of this group, and read "Finally some truth about grain-free and DCM". It will help set your mind at ease.
  • Riley is having her very first home cooked "doggie stew" tonight as she has had a few bouts of diarrhea since yesterday. Paws crossed it fixes the issue, she's never needed a bland diet "treatment" before.
    • Mommy's homemade stew seems to have fixed things right up. Poop nice and normal this morning :)
(It was boiled ground beef, chicken breast, rice and carrot... I gave some to the baby too, Riley liked it more than he did though lol )
  • I have been feeding my love bugs Origen for years now, however I have heard they have been bought out by Nestle. Anyone know if this will change the foods quality? I'm concerned. I see they are still listed on the DK food recommended list.
  • Yes, Stacy, the risk is to humans more than to dogs.
My issue with a company suing a government agency for the right to sell contaminated products. Those are our tax dollars that will be used to defend this frivolous suit.

  • I don't feed this food, so I don't have a dog, literal or figurative, in this discussion. But isn't this a similar issue to companies that want to sell unpasteriuzed juices? I know there is a group of people that would like to take us back to the "olden days" where things were all natural and we didn't worry about things like vaccines and food safety. I think they lose track of how many people died from contaminated food, water, and viral illnesses that we have all but eliminated today. I think contamination still happens, but I don't want to buy anything from a company who has an acceptable level of contamination. No expert here, but I think the dogs tolerate salmonella better than humans. The dogs may be fine with the food, but there's a real risk of making the humans sick just from feeding it.
  • And I thank you for your information.  I will continue to study this issue from all points of reference.  Reading isn't the only avenue for accurate information and as a "lady from the older generation" I find the new "media" challenging but I still try to wade through it.  Taking everything I see and read with a grain of salt.

  • More impartial factual information on the Answer Foods lawsuit.

I personally don't want to buy pet food from a company that argues that it should be okay to have "some" salmonella in its products, regardless of what the FDA does or doesn't do. To me, that's just common sense.

Pet food firm sues FDA; wants some Salmonella to be allowed
A company that markets raw meat and poultry as pet food is suing the FDA saying the agency’s intolerance of Salmonella contamination violates the U.S.

Bully Bones?

I see that the Jones Naturals catalog has bully bones and various similar chews in it?  Jones Naturals is on the recommended treat list.  Does anyone give these to their dogs?  I am looking for safe bully bones and can't find any in my local stores.  Anyone get Jones Naturals bully bones or are there others that you recommend?  My local store only sells some that are from foreign countries which I do not want to buy.  My pup really needs something to chew besides nylabones.  Thanks!

Blue Buffalo Blue Carnivora Woodland Blend

I know Blue Buffalo isn't on the good food list - is it because they're owned by General Mills? But I came across this food, and I wondered, if it was owned by say, Fromm would this look like a good food? 42% protein is higher than anything I feed, and I don't see anything that looks like a red flag but I'm not sure I would recognize it. I'm also just curious because it's really expensive - $94.99 for a 22lb bag at Petco. Not looking to change foods, just curious. Ingredients PRIMARY…
