Spay or Neuter is 8 weeks to early?!

Started this discussion. Last reply by LORRY SWETLAND Jan 22, 2018. 16 Replies

we are looking into breeders to buy a labradoodle. Some of the puppies come spay or neutered. The research I have done some say it's way too young...Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks Continue

"I did a lot of research and talking to different VETS the information that I agreed with was ----if your dog will be 50 lbs or less at full maturity don't spay or neuter until a yr old. If your dog will be over 50 lbs at full maturity wait…"

Amy and Annabelle replied to Laura's discussion Spay or Neuter is 8 weeks to early?!
"I'm so glad my vet at the time I got Annabelle refused to spay her before 6 months, 12 months for larger breed dogs. My breeder said to have her spayed before 6 months, in the contract. I knew nothing about the possible side effects of ESN at…"

"The gonads have a lot of input into growth control. There is a theory out there that may be a reason a lot of dogs these days have hip dysplasia.  When the gonads are removed early, the bones don't know when to stop growing so they…"

"You've already gotten good advice, but I wanted to chime in - at the risk of sounding bitter. I think these breeders are not doing early spay and neuter to protect their breed, or the puppy, but their market share. What is keeping someone else…"

"I regret Cocoa being spayed at 8 weeks.  My vet thinks that it is why she has such long skinny legs and that it was a factor In her torn ACL. I will never allow another ESN- it would be a deal breaker for me. "
