Seriously, could anything else happen today!!!

Posted on March 25, 2011 at 6:14pm 14 Comments

Okay so today started with Bruno being fed a wipe by my 1 year old that he can apparently swallow in 2 seconds because it was gone! Midday I find a tick on Bruno but of course he can't sit for a second so I have to wait for the calvary to come home and help! Now as I prepare for my daughters birthday I hear my mother say, "What does Bruno have in his mouth(he was outside)". I go to let him in and there is a giant piece of poop that he is just chewing on! Really! So now I have to stop everything… Continue

I meant crate him the moment you are ready to sit down to eat.  Don't let him hang out there and PRACTICE bad behavior.  Crate him every time you eat until you've been able to give him LOTS of practice on stays and you have worked him up to a 5 minute stay or longer.  At that point you can try for a 10 minute stay...then a 15 minute...then 30 minutes.  That should be long enough for you to finish a meal.

But don't expect him to behave before he's been TRAINED, by you, to hold his stays for extended periods.  And until he CAN do that you might as well make his life easier and crate him or put his leash on and attach it to a piece of unmovable furniture near you but not so close he can bug you while you eat.  Give him a chew toy to occupy him and keep an eye on him but enjoy your meal.

You should ask your question about Bruno in the main Forum so people can respond :) My suggestion is to train him in obedience so you can have him 'down-stay' a few feet away from the table while you eat. All it takes is training and then in a few weeks or a couple of months he'll be able to do it well. In the meantime you can crate him while you eat or tie his leash to something heavy (furniture leg, doorknob) near you and in sight but out of reach of the table.

Hi Trina,

So happy to hear that Bruno is settling in well to his new home:) You had asked about Brutus sleeping through the night... honestly, we cant take much credit for it. My daughters slept in sleeping bags next to his create for the first two nights incase he needed anything. But other than the occasional pet, he didn't need a thing. He is doing well with his 'tricks' he will do almost anything for a 'tricky trainers' chewy treat.

Thank you for the friend request. I do have a couple of suggestions for the digging. One trainer suggested that you put poop in the hole and that the dog would no longer dig there. Another suggested that you put a blown up balloon in a hole and cover it and that when the dog dug the balloon would pop and shock them. Another trainer said there is a product called dog shock (I think( that is a small box with wires that you strip the wires at the end and put a bite of hot dog on. Then put it in the hole and the dog would get a shock when they tried to get the hot dog. I guess it depends upon how severe the digging is. We have put rocks into the hole with dirt on top so that when they dig they end up digging rocks.

Thank you for the friend request, Trina.  Your profile photo is adorable. I love the name Bruno, too. Oh, to have a little puppy again!  They grow up so fast.  It's hard to believe that Sheba is 2 and Duke will be 2 in March.  Enjoy Bruno's and take loads of pictures.  Have fun on DoodleKisses and if I can help with anything, let me know!
