Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I recently got a Wisdom Panel done on Orwell because I've always been suspicious that he has something else in him other than lab and poodle. As I suspected, Orwell's mother is not a pure lab and poodle cross.

Here are his results:

So, Orwell is 12.5% a mix of something. They couldn't pinpoint the breeds, but the most likely is a toy dog mix, then a sporting mix, and then a herding mix. I'm having a hard time believing the toy portion of him because he is quite tall at 27". I want to test his mother now to figure out exactly what is there. She was a rescue labradoodle, but it turns out that her labrador side is not pure.

I'm not surprised either. I'm not even upset. I knew what I was doing, and I went ahead and did it anyway. I'm happy that I have Orwell, but I don't think I would have felt comfortable getting him if the circumstances were different. He does have a grandfather that was a couple years ago 16 years old at the time and was running and playing with Orwell's mother. I'm hoping Orwell inherits that longevity, but I'm prepared for anything.

If his mother is a rescue, then not at all surprising that there is something else in the mix.  You usually do not get purebred animals from rescues.  Enjoy your dog and obviously you are not going to be breeding, so that is a good thing.

Kaitee, it would be interesting to find out what the mom is then.  Be sure to let us know if you do find genetic info on the mom.

He came from a backyard breeding. I didn't originally want to get a labradoodle, but my mom made me go see the puppies and I fell in love with Orwell. I know the man who bred him (he rescued the mother). While I still don't condone backyard breeding, I felt a little better knowing that I knew who he came from. He would most likely let me DNA test Orwell's mom (he would probably be interested himself), but I haven't been in contact with him recently as he has had a slight career change.

It would be fun to have the mom's DNA tested.  If Orwell is from a breeder, I don't think they would let you because they wouldn't want anyone else to know that she wasn't what they said.  If she was a rescue herself, no one could possibly know without testing, what she was other than what she 'looks' like.  If they are breeders, they are irresponsible to have bred an unknown dog without doing both genetic and health testing.  Having met Orwell at the Doodlekisses romp in Walla Walla, I can attest that he is a great  (and large) dog!
